Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme and fluctuating shifts in mood, energy levels, and activity levels. People with bipolar disorder experience episodes of mania and depression, which can vary in duration and severity.

During a manic episode, individuals may feel overly energized, euphoric, or irritable. They may engage in impulsive and risky behaviors, have racing thoughts, experience a decreased need for sleep, and display an inflated sense of self-confidence.

Conversely, during a depressive episode, individuals may feel sad, hopeless, and lose interest or pleasure in activities they once enjoyed. They may experience changes in appetite and sleep patterns, have difficulty concentrating, feel fatigue or low energy, and at times, have thoughts of death or suicide.

MOYA Mental Health Services can help you.

Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective disorder is a mental health condition that combines symptoms of both schizophrenia and mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder. It is characterized by a combination of psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations or delusions, and mood symptoms, such as mania or depression.

In schizoaffective disorder, individuals experience episodes of psychosis that can include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, or negative symptoms like reduced emotional expression. These symptoms occur alongside significant mood disturbances, which can vary between manic, depressive, or mixed episodes.

There are two main subtypes of schizoaffective disorder: bipolar type and depressive type. The bipolar type involves periods of mania or hypomania alongside the psychotic symptoms, while the depressive type is characterized by major depressive episodes along with psychosis.

Suicide Prevention

Suicide means ending one's own life. Suicide is a major cause of death and mental health problems are a big part of suicide. Many factors increase the risk of suicide. For example, people who have experienced drug abuse, trauma-violence including child abuse, bullying, sexual violence have higher suicide risk. Other factors protect against suicide. For example, being connected to family and the community is protective. Seeking treatment early for mental health problems may decrease suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
